Building Structure Through Health: Welcoming Autumn with Intention
As the seasons shift, so too does our energy. For many self-employed or self-directed people, structure can easily blur when life gets busy. Over time, I’ve learned that making health the foundation of my structure is what keeps everything steady. When wellbeing is at the centre, creativity, clarity, and productivity naturally follow.
Autumn—with its cooling air and quieter pace—is the perfect moment to realign, return inward, and build a structure that supports balance and emotional healing.
🌤️ Starting the Day Right: Awakening Digestion and Connection
One of the simplest ways to reconnect with body and mind is to start your morning outdoors. Take your coffee or tea outside, even for just a few minutes. The combination of fresh air, natural light, and mindful breathing awakens the digestive system, grounds your energy, and helps restore balance.
Did you know digestion and sinus health are linked? Many sinus issues actually begin in the gut—Many chronic sinus issues — from congestion to pressure headaches — can be linked to imbalances in gut health or allergic reactions such as an itchy scalp, rash, blepharitis, swelling, or achiness so nurturing digestion can bring surprising benefits throughout the body.
While I’m outside, I like to connect with my plants. Whether barefoot or wrapped up warm, this small ritual helps me connect with nature and myself before the day begins.
🍋 Three Autumn Practices for Balance and Structure
1. Lemon “Porridge” (Without the Porridge!)
A soothing, grain-free breakfast that warms and nourishes. My lemon porridge recipe contains no oats yet feels deeply satisfying. Email me for the full recipe.
It’s gentle on digestion, supports gut repair, and sets a calm tone for the day.
2. Dowsing and Energy Healing for Clarity
Each autumn, I make a seasonal list of priorities—then use a pendulum to dowse which tasks or intentions are most aligned. It’s a beautiful way to clarify focus and channel energy intentionally. I include financial tasks and accounting, alongside ways to strengthen my immune system so that I deal better with allergic reactions such as achiness, chemical sensitivities and although you might not be conscious of this, metal sensitivities.
3. Creating Structure with the Rock–Sand–Water Method
Autumn invites reflection and order. I use a paper diary to visually block out time, treating appointments with myself as seriously as meetings with others.
Here’s the Rock–Sand–Water method I use to structure my week:
🪨 Rocks: Personal goals or creative projects that matter most; help with Autumn allergies?
🏖️ Sand: Primary responsibilities—family, home maintenance, or necessary tasks.
đź’§ Water: Optional tasks that fill the gaps (repairs, small jobs, etc.).
Put the rocks in first—your life’s priorities—then add the rest around them.
🍂 The Season of Letting Go
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn corresponds with the Lung and Large Intestine meridians—the organs of release and refinement. It’s a time to shed, simplify, and restore clarity, just as trees let go of their leaves.
This is the season of metal energy, representing structure, discernment, and transformation. People with metal sensitivities or chemical sensitivities may feel this seasonal shift more acutely, experiencing skin flare-ups, fatigue, or mild allergic reactions. Supporting gut health and liver detoxification through food and rest can help minimise these effects.
Autumn is the perfect time to:
Declutter your space (reducing dust and dust mites)
Review your finances or unfinished projects
Prune back both your garden and your commitments
These simple acts help you release what’s no longer needed—physically and emotionally.
🥣 Seasonal Nutrition: Supporting Digestion and Immunity
As temperatures drop, the body naturally seeks warmth and nourishment. Autumn is ideal for gentle cleansing and digestive support.
Try these simple seasonal shifts:
Reduce dairy: Even without intolerance, dairy can form a mucous coating around cells, limiting nutrient absorption. A short break often brings clearer sinuses and improved digestion, and brighter energy.
Experiment with gluten-free days: Taking breaks from wheat, barley, or rye can ease gut inflammation and support emotional balance.
Add nutrient-rich foods: Think soups, root vegetables, broths, and fermented foods to strengthen immunity and promote gut health.
🧠Gut Health and the GAPS Protocol
As a GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) practitioner, I guide clients through this therapeutic nutritional approach designed to heal the gut and strengthen the gut–brain connection.
The GAPS protocol unfolds in three main stages:
Intro GAPS: A short, healing phase with broths and easily digested foods.
Full GAPS: Gradually reintroducing nutrient-rich, whole foods.
Maintenance: Creating sustainable routines for long-term gut health.
Many people notice that GAPS-inspired foods help ease allergic reactions, chemical sensitivities, and metal sensitivities, while improving energy levels and mental clarity.
🌾 Embracing the Rhythm of Autumn
Autumn reminds us that endings are not losses but openings for renewal. It’s a season for refining, grounding, and reconnecting with what truly matters.
By aligning your habits, nutrition, and structure with nature’s cycles—and integrating principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy healing, and mindful self-care—you create a foundation that supports every part of your life.
